Portuguese universities are well known by the industry known for the quality of their students. It’s common to see foreign companies recruiting in Portugal and even setting up development centers in here. The quality of the engineers is one of the reasons for that decision.

To bring even more competitiveness and experience to college students, Porto Summer of Code (PSC) put together a software development competition for them. It all started last year with their 1st edition where more than 50 participants, split into 16 teams, took to Porto a true technological party spirit. The projects span across areas like citizenship, transportation, social responsibility, tourism, social networks and health.

Porto Summer of CodeIn 2015 they are back, challenging students to develop software solutions around the subject “Everyday Digital”.

How does it work? You as a student have to build a team from 2 to 4 people (all of them enrolled in any Portuguese College Level Institution). Despite being a software development competition, the team can be on other fields of engineering or design. The whole application process happens on their website and time is running short, the deadline for applications is already on August 21st.

Not all the projects will make it to the competition. The organization will evaluate the originality, compliance with this edition’s theme, implementation within the competition timeframe, among others. The results of the project selection will be announced to every candidate on August 24th.

It all starts on the 7th of September and finishes on the 13th. 7 days split into two different phases: during the first 4 days the teams work remotely and then they all meet in Porto (Edifício AXA – Avenida dos Aliados) to work onsite. The best 8 teams will have the opportunity to showcase their work in a final presentation session open to the community, during which the Jury will decide the winners of PSC’15.

Porto Summer of Code is co-organized by AlumniEI-FEUP and Porto City Hall.
